Description: The development of wireless communication among vehicles creates the foundation for higher levels of automation. It is assumed that cooperation among vehicles is based on a mutual agreement on traffic and coordination rules and a common overall goal on for example safer traffic flow. The problem that this thesis shall investigate is how to merge two vehicle platoons in a highway scenario where one lane is closed ahead for example due to an accident or a road construction work. This should be performed in a safe and coordinated way. The thesis shall propose a solution and verify its safeness (considering communication disturbances and sensor faults) with the help of an analytic and/or a simulation based analysis. The solution will probably include the design of a coordination protocol as well as control and decision methods that handle vehicle agreements on distances, speeds, and time points for platoon merge manoeuvres; assuming that they cooperate.
Requirements: The students must be skilled in programming using tools such as MatLab for design of kinematic and dynamic models and also interested in knowing more about simulation at system level using tools such as Simulink, VEINS, SUMO and OMNeT++.
