Abstract Interconnection networks have a key role in distributed processing systems of today but to follow the evolution in processing power, new technologies are needed. Multiple-channel fiber-optic communication can solve the emerging demand of bandwidth. New protocols must, however, be used to coordinate the use of multiple high-speed channels. This paper describes protocols and fiber-optic network architectures that are considered to be useful as flexible interconnection networks in future parallel and distributed computing systems. Also, a short overview of system components and system technologies is presented.
