Ryan Newton: Why is auto-tuning not composable?

Have you ever used auto-tuned software without knowing you were doing so? From a software engineering perspective, where modularity and encapsulation are paramount, auto-tuning currently has serious drawbacks. In the future, what will it take to import two modules into a program, each of which uses auto-tuning features internally, without the programmer becoming intimately familiar with the implementation details?
